“A big contribution of this paper is pinning down that it is the meaning-related space that makes sentences memorable.”
– Greta Tuckute, MIT Research Fellow –

MIT cognitive scientists have discovered that distinctive meaning, not visual features or word choice, is what makes sentences stick in our memory. Sentences with unique meanings occupy less crowded “brain space,” making them easier to recall later, while similar-sounding messages get jumbled together in densely packed neural real estate. This finding supports the theory that our memories aren’t perfect recordings but rather noisy representations that become harder to distinguish when they overlap with similar experiences.
