One hundred sixty-seven years ago today, Edwin Drake’s bit dropped into a crevice at 69.5 feet along Oil Creek. Locals called the project Drake’s Folly, and his backers had already agreed: the order to shut it down was still in the mail. Some ventures written off are genuinely finished. Some are at 69 feet.
