Agamemnon’s embassy reaches Achilles in Book IX of the Iliad carrying tripods, gold, horses, seven cities, and the return of Briseis under oath. Achilles turns down every item. What he wanted back was the standing, not the property, and Odysseus carried no terms that restored it. The richest offer in the poem bid on the wrong variable, and the Achaeans paid for it in ships.
