Two hundred fifty years ago today, the Continental Congress voted for independence. Saturday’s fireworks will honor the Declaration, but the decisive act came first: on July 2, 1776, the delegates adopted Richard Henry Lee’s resolution, the formal break from Britain. Lee’s clauses already looked past the rupture to the foreign alliances and confederation our little endeavor would need to survive.
