Between Lincoln’s election on November 6, 1860 and his inauguration on March 4, 1861, seven (7) states seceded from the Union. Lincoln then went on to form what historian Doris Kearns Goodwin called a “team of rivals.” Lincoln understood that when stakes reach crisis level, inclusive, collaborative leadership trumps rank partisanship and personal insults every time.
