Specialized surgical robots weigh 1,800 pounds and reshape the operating room around themselves. UC San Diego’s team went the other way, teleoperating a 60-pound off-the-shelf humanoid through gallbladder removals on live animals: slower, still glitchy, recalibrated mid-procedure, yet cheap and small enough to deploy where surgeons simply aren’t. Capability is quietly migrating from purpose-built hardware to general-purpose platforms configured by software.
