Despite an inherent desire for authenticity, most of us struggle with how much of our “true self” to reveal in the workplace. Turns out, those who occasionally say “!#@% it” are not only being authentic but as recent research shows, they’re also more honest. A forthcoming article based on three separate studies “found a consistent positive relationship between profanity and honesty; profanity was associated with less lying and deception at the individual level, and with higher integrity at the society level.” While I don’t endorse weaving “a tapestry of obscenity that as far as we know is still hanging in space over Lake Michigan” I can embrace the idea of occasionally channelling your inner Dr. McCoy and letting your true self out to play.
