When a storm ripped the power line, meter and mast from my house at midnight this past Sunday, I not only needed Specialists to solve the resulting problems – I also needed Generalists.

Generalists are often overlooked in favor of Specialists, yet your team needs both to succeed. Generalists connect seemingly disparate sets of information pulling from their experience in one area and applying it to another. They serve as a bridge between the expertise of the Specialists and the real world problems you’re trying to solve. And while they don’t always have the pedigree of a Specialist, their value is incalculable (and very apparent during crunch time).

A favorite 80’s show of mine said it best: “If you have a problem… if no one else can help… and if you can find them… maybe you can hire…” a Generalist.
