The “people problem” we keep hearing about isn’t quite what you think it is. A recent American Enterprise Institute (AEI) study examined the STEM “skills gap” and discovered something altogether different. AEI found that “the emphasis on STEM in workforce development is obscuring deeper, widespread challenges to employability relating to noncognitive skills associated with persistence and character.” Translation: noncognitive, nontechnical skills are more sought after than their technical counterparts and are in extremely short supply among the workforce.
