“How do I… ?” is a question I both rely upon and am often confronted with. It’s practical, has value and can be a fundamental starting point for forward movement. Yet “How do I… ?” is also, by the very wording of the question, tactical in nature and bounded by action.

Alternatively, the question “What if … ?” is an open-ended question of discovery and exploration. It is bounded solely by imagination, opens the door to a wide range of possibilities and sets the conditions for more strategic (en)visioning versus tactical doing.

Both questions have a place in your toolkit – you need only decide which to use and when. Choose wisely.
