3. Digital Dojo
In July 2024 we posted about the five (5) projected levels of AI with our subscriber-only analysis, The Road Ahead: Understanding Capability “Levels” of AI. That post has never been more relevant as this week brought fresh news regarding Level 3 AI, which is all about “agents.”
While we are still working to establish consensus on how to define these terms, in broad strokes, an “agent” is a single software program that can independently sense and act, like a worker carrying out specific tasks. “Agentic AI”, however, is a broader term that describes AI systems that display agency – meaning they show independent initiative, decision-making, and goal-directed behavior, often in more sophisticated ways than simple agents. The term “agentic” emphasizes the AI’s ability to act with purpose and autonomy, more like a proactive partner than just a tool. Think of a simple agent as an AI assistant that schedules meetings when asked, while agentic AI might proactively suggest scheduling a follow-up meeting based on the content of your conversation.
