Yesterday I was talking with a friend of mine about a major product mishap that’s going to cost a company in his industry tens of millions of dollars. The error was likely avoidable and his statement to me was “If you rely on people, $*@! can happen.” He’s 100% correct and my gut tells me that somewhere, someone either disregarded or downright ignored a critical step in that company’s process. Yet that’s the thing about process – it’s successful execution still depends a great deal upon people and we MUST continue to rely upon them. That’s not the big takeaway here, though. Instead, consider the fact that as we move into an increasingly automated future, the decisions that you rely upon your leaders to make will likely carry increased and compounded weight with your organization. So… how confident are you in their ability to make the right call?
