Marcus Buckingham closed out this year’s Vistage Chair conference with a keynote address where he discussed the idea of “Tough love” and how the love part is too often forgotten. He observed that “Tough without the love is just brutality.”

Over the years I’ve borne witness to a great many abuses of power with a common explanation being “It’s just tough love.” I call BS on that excuse and encourage you to remember that brutality disguised within purported compassion is still just that… brutality.
