When I first read futurist Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock I couldn’t fully appreciate his concepts of “information overload,” our shift to a “super-industrial society” and the ramifications wrought by exponential change. Since Toffler’s recent passing, though, I’ve been thinking a great deal about his insights and how exponential change is constantly forcing what’s next into what’s now.
Toffler wrote that “Change is avalanching upon our heads and most people are grotesquely unprepared to cope with it.” If that’s true (and I believe it is), the only true coping mechanism comes courtesy of Brad Pitt’s portrayal of Billy Bean in the movie Moneyball: “Adapt or die.”
