“The difficulty of tactical maneuvering consists in turning the devious into the direct, and misfortune into gain.”
– Sun Tzu –
Iran needs (and has designed) a new jet fighter but due to sanctions can’t produce the airplane bodies (airframes). Additionally, they’re running out of pilots. Yet without a new plane, training pilots is an impossible task.
Enter the Kowsar jet fighter, which is an older model airframe with brand new avionics. This provides Iran with a “new” jet for its fleet and the ability to train pilots on an avionics system that will be used for decades. Is the solution ideal for Iran? No. Does it solve multiple problems, turn misfortune into gain and advance their long-term strategic objectives? Absolutely.
