Between 1870 and 1890 Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka) lost 90% of it’s coffee crop to “coffee rust” and went from being a leading coffee exporter to a region of abandoned coffee fields. Ceylon eventually repurposed its plantations to become a leading exporter of tea, yet the cycle is poised to happen in other coffee growing regions around the world because coffee rust still has no cure.
