This week we celebrate the 48th anniversary of the first humans landing on the moon. Yet our success was far from guaranteed, with Presidential speechwriter William Safire preparing the chillingly titled advance memo “IN EVENT OF MOON DISASTER.“

Our nation no longer thinks in terms of moonshots. Yet for one brief period in history, we publicly grappled with an audacious goal and an uncertain outcome.

Our leaders at the time understood what good leaders have always known: Anything worth doing involves risk and failure is always a possibility.
