President Eisenhower was better equipped than most U.S. Presidents to observe U.S. military spending and put it into context. Yet even he couldn’t foresee that in 2017, global military spending would rise to the record level of $1.74 trillion with the U.S. accounting for $610 billion of that spend. Strategic planning season is right around the corner and I encourage you to remember those numbers and then ask yourself, How have our organization’s budgets changed over the past several years and why? While your budget changes can never compare to the above figures, asking “Why” will often provide insights that help answer the question “What next?“
