Your confirmation bias is making decisions for you… and the two of you really need to consider breaking up.
Confirmation bias occurs when we favor new evidence that confirms our existing beliefs or theories while simultaneously discounting alternative possibilities. (For more on this, check out Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People).
We all have confirmation bias(es) and if you’re in the business of making good decisions you can’t afford to let your bias drive that bus… but what to do? First, discover and acknowledge the bias. Next, exercise vigilance by noting how and when it arises. Finally, challenge the bias by surrounding yourself with peers and advisers who are willing to tell you when and why you’re wrong.
Confronting a confirmation bias is never easy but, just like any break up, it’s time to tell your bias that you both need to see other people.
