1. Paper Trail: AI Research Decoded
Why (and How) We Analyze Academic Research About AI
One question that often arises from prospective Subscribers is why we analyze academic research and what that analysis looks like. Here’s the 411 on why (and what) we do with academic papers about AI:
- Our why is straightforward: We are laser focused on applying generative AI to the middle market because these tools DO NOT come with an instruction manual or well developed use cases. To riff on an over-used metaphor, we are figuring out not only how to fly the plane while it’s being built but how to go farther, higher and faster as individual plane components (like the engine and wings) are upgraded during flight. In short, we’re helping you figure out how what’s now while simultaneously preparing you for what’s next.
- Every week we sort through upwards of 300 published and pre-print publication academic papers focused exclusively on AI to select solely the ones that are relevant to the leaders of middle market organizations
- We break these papers down into articles that do not exceed 1500 words and organize it each article with the following sections:
- Executive Summary
- Key Findings
- Recommendations for Middle Market Leaders
- Future Trends
- Final Thoughts
- We also include an infographic that summarizes a key point from the research
Foundation Models: The New Frontier of AI for Middle Market Leaders
A paper titled Understanding Foundation Models: Are We Back in 1924? poses interesting questions about how Foundation Models are reshaping AI capabilities and what it means for middle market organizations. Our analysis explores this research and key takeaways include:
- Foundation Models are demonstrating advanced reasoning abilities, rivaling larger counterparts
- Current benchmarking methods struggle to fully evaluate FM capabilities
- Understanding FM internal mechanisms remains a challenge, similar to neuroscience efforts with the human brain
