“We have ordered our government to communicate to the governments of the United States, Great Britain, China and the Soviet Union that our empire accepts the provisions of their joint declaration.”
– Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito, 1901–1989, reigned 1926–1989) –
From the 1920s onward, Japan’s military steadily amassed power, sidelining both the Emperor and civilian government… with catastrophic consequences. Then, on this day 79 years ago, Emperor Hirohito took a stand. His “surrender broadcast”, secretly recorded and smuggled out of the palace, aired despite military opposition, finally ending the war.
True leadership demands the courage to break from the status quo, especially in crisis. Hirohito, though late, ultimately took action.
As you approach the week’s end, ask yourself: What established patterns in my life or work no longer serve myself or others? Once identified, take decisive action to change course.
Stay safe. Stay healthy. Be strong. Lead well.
