“The best I can say is that Inchon is not impossible.”
– Admiral James Doyle, commander Amphibious Force, Seventh Fleet –
Seventy years ago this week amphibious forces landed at Inchon, catching North Korean Communist forces by surprise and ultimately driving them back across the 38th parallel. Military historians have lauded this operation for decades yet they often overlook or minimize a key component of its success – critical intelligence from locals that enabled the navy to successfully navigate the treacherous approach. So, the next time you’re considering a strategic initiative, remember that there’s no substitute for getting local (intelligence).
