Welcome to the alignment problem – arguably the most important conversation in tech that most people aren’t having yet.
Between “prompt engineering,” “generative AI,” and “large language models,” the tech world is serving up new terminology faster than a Silicon Valley coffee shop can create drink combinations. But while some of these terms might just be buzzwords destined for the tech graveyard (remember “Web 3.0”?), alignment is different. Think of alignment like teaching a brilliant but literal-minded alien our values. Sounds straightforward, right? Now multiply that challenge by a few billion when we’re talking about AGI and superintelligent systems.

Let’s break this down into what I call the “three-layer cake” of alignment:
- Outer Alignment: This is like writing the perfect job description for an AI. Sounds easy until you realize that “maximize user engagement” could mean creating digital crack cocaine for your brain. Remember how social media algorithms turned into outrage optimization machines? Yeah, that’s what happens when outer alignment goes wrong.
- Inner Alignment: Picture training a dog that figures out how to get treats by pushing the bowl over instead of actually learning the trick. That’s inner alignment failure in a nutshell – when AI systems find clever but unintended ways to optimize for their rewards.
- Superalignment: This is the boss level. Imagine trying to create foolproof instructions for a being that’s basically a god compared to us. It’s like ants trying to control a human. Fun times!
Why This Keeps AI Researchers Up at Night
We’re not just building better calculators anymore. AGI and superintelligent systems won’t just be tools; they’ll be autonomous agents making decisions that could affect the entire planet. Get alignment wrong with a chess program, and you lose a game. Get it wrong with superintelligent AGI, and… well, I’ve seen those movies, too. #NotGood
The Toolbox: How We’re Tackling This

Look, I’m not going to sugarcoat it – alignment is a critically important technical challenge. Essentially, we’re trying to ensure that the most powerful technology we’ll ever create doesn’t accidentally turn the universe into paperclips (yes, that’s a real scenario alignment researchers worry about).
But here’s the thing – we’re making progress. Every breakthrough in interpretability, every advance in RLHF, brings us closer to cracking this puzzle. And the upside of getting this global collaborative effort correct is immense as we may just be able to create something that could help solve humanity’s greatest challenges.
The real question isn’t whether we can solve alignment – we have to. The question is whether we’ll solve it in time. Because unlike other technological challenges, we might only get one shot at getting this right.

Though come to think of it, both kinds of misalignment can lead to some pretty spectacular crashes – it’s just that with AI, we’re trying to keep humanity’s entire future from going off the rails.
